Whenever planting consider the gap spaces needed between plants and rows of plants. Maintain a gap of at least 5 to 8 feet between two plants and a gap of at least 8 to 12 feet between two rows. Roots of a grape plant generally grow up to 3 feet length wise and forty feet in the soil. Enough gap space is crucial as these plants will require space to grow properly. Never make the mistake of planting other plants near grapes. Space is always needed for proper flourishment.

Grapes grow as grapevines and it is imperative to know how to build trellises. Trellises are of various types. Grapevine supports stands out as their most important function. The trellises that are the strongest should use gauge wire.

Grapes do require constant pruning when dormant. Kniffen gour cane method is the most popular method. In this method two canes of each plant are kept on either side of the plant. Then the older canes are then cut off. The canes that are kept back should ideally have the same diameter and about 10-20 buds. You should never chop off a renewal spur. Every single arm should end up with 4 renewal spurs.
